Weight Classifications

There are fourteen weight classes in high school wrestling. They are:

103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 275

Each wrestler is required to establish a certified minimum weight prior to January 15th; wrestlers cannot re-certify at a lower weight during the season. After certification is sent to the state association, a wrestler cannot weigh-in more than one weight class above the weight of certification without re-certifying at the higher weight.
*A two-pound growth allowance will be added to each weight class on or after January 15th.

Weighing-In

Wrestlers weigh-in 30 to 60 minutes before the time a dual meet is scheduled to begin and 1 to 2 hours before a tournament is scheduled to begin. When there are consecutive days of team competition, a one pound additional allowance is granted each day for all wrestlers. A contestant cannot wrestle more than one weight class above his weigh-in weight.

Weight Control Program

A good weight control program involves the wrestler, his parents, his coach, and his physician. It discourages severe weight reduction and/or wide variations in weight. An ideal weight program is one in which a medical professional assists in establishing a minimum weight through the checking of body fat and hydration. The recommended minimum body fat percentage should not be lower than seven percent.
