01/23-01/24 – Tim Brown Memorial (@ War Memorial Auditorium) – Sacramento, CA
The varsity wrestlers traveled to Sacramento to participate amongst 81 schools at the Tim Brown Memorial. This tournament proved to be one of the toughest tournaments on our schedule this season as the Warriors returned home with no medalists. Top performers for the Warriors included senior Arnold Hwa and junior David Wilson. Arnold advanced to the second day of competition despite losing to #4 seeded Paul Gomez of Liberty – Brentwood by a 3-0 decision in his last match Friday night. Arnold then drew Tim Ditrich of Ponderosa in his first consolation match Saturday morning and lost another close decision, 3-1. Gomez is ranked #1 in NCS and Ditrich is ranked #3 in SJS and honorable mention in the CIF State rankings. David Wilson had three quality wins in the 147-lb. weight class over the weekend, winning his matches by 15-0 technical fall, 12-3 major decision and a 22-second fall respectively. His two losses came to highly regarded wrestlers in Dillon Reid of Red Bluff HS (ranked #4 in the Northern Section) and Mike Crowell (Honorable Mention in the Sac-Joaquin Section).

The Mission San Jose Warriors improved their record to 3-1 in MVAL action with another dominant win over American High School on Senior night. The junior varsity squad defeated American 58-6, while the varsity squad pulled out a 51-24 victory. The most exciting match of the evening came when senior Arnold Hwa moved up to the 114-lb. weight class to face Thi Pham. 01/31 – Puma Classic (@ Maria Carillo HS) – Santa Rosa, CA
Arnold Hwa earned his second tournament title of the season at the Puma Classic last Saturday. Arnold went undefeated with a 5-0 record including wins over the #3 seed in the semifinals and #1 seed in the finals. Combined with his win over Thi Pham of American HS (ranked #5 in NCS) on Wednesday, Arnold has set himself up nicely for a good seed at the Mission San Jose Invitational this weekend.

2/4 – Newark Memorial Dual (@ Newark Memorial HS)
The Mission San Jose varsity team just missed out on an upset win over Newark Memorial in what was probably the most exciting dual in the league this season. In a fight for second place in MVAL, Newark came out to a 30-6 lead before the Warriors battled back and outscored Newark 25-8 in the final seven matches. In the end, the eighteen points forfeited in the three upper weight classes was too much to overcome as the Warriors lost the dual 38-31.
David Wilson (147) started the dual off on a good note, recording a quick pin in 1:07 over his opponent Mykal-Lee Troche. The Warriors were also led by sophomores Wei Kuo (114) and Leo Yang (132) both scoring huge bonus points after recording pins over their respective opponents.

2/6-2/7 – Mission San Jose Invitational
As usual, the Mission San Jose Invitational featured some of the top wrestlers in the state of California. A total of sixty teams entered this year’s tournament representing the North Coast, Central, Central Coast and Oakland sections as a final tune-up before entering the post-season. Clovis High School won the team title with 255.5 points, with De La Salle (160.5) and James Logan (123.5) rounding out the top three. Scott Sakaguchi (Clovis) was awarded the Champion of Champions trophy after recording four straight pins, including one over Nick Waldrop of Freedom in the finals, to win the title in the 147-pound weight class.
For the Warriors, senior Arnold Hwa earned a 4th place medal in the 105-pound weight class after being seeded 5th. After advancing to the quarterfinals Saturday morning, Arnold faced Kristian Blanco of James Logan, losing a major decision 13-3. Arnold then reeled off three straight wins before facing Blanco again the consolation finals, this time losing a very close 5-3 decision. Other standouts include Bill Hararah (137) and David Wilson (142). Bill pinned the #4 seed in the first round of the tournament before advancing to the quarterfinal round Saturday. David dropped to the 142-pound weight class for the first time all season and wrestled well, but had a tough draw in the tournament, facing the #2 seeded Ben Kelley of Clovis in championship round 1 then #3 seeded Clint Joaquin of Freedom in consolation round 3.
Next week, Mission faces John F. Kennedy to wrap up the MVAL dual season Thursday night, and will wait and see if we qualify for the NCS Dual Team Championships on Saturday.

02/21 - MVAL Finals (@ Mission San Jose HS)
The Mission San Jose Warriors kicked off the post-season as they hosted the MVAL Finals on Saturday. Five Mission wrestlers were crowned champions in their respective weight classes Saturday night: Larry Price (105 pounds), Siwen Dickstein (100-106), Komyar Moghadam (142), Michael Lee (147) and Jose Ruvalcaba (147). The JV wrestlers turned in a great performance in their last outing of the season, with fourteen total wrestlers earning medals.
The varsity squad advanced ten of its eleven wrestlers to the NCS Championships next weekend. Mission had finalists in seven weight classes but only one was crowned champion at the end of the night. Senior captain Jose Ruvalcaba had a successful return to the mat, defeating the #4 seed Dennis Nguyen of Newark Memorial by technical fall in the semifinals, before defeating the #3 seed Aaron Boone of James Logan by 12-5 decision in the finals to become just the seventh three-time MVAL champion in the history of Mission San Jose wrestling.
In the girl's bracket, sophomore Siwen Dickstein went undefeated with a 3-0 record to claim her first MVAL championship. Siwen will enter the Girl's NCS Championships next Saturday at John F. Kennedy High School as she looks to win her first NCS championship.
Congratulations to all JV wrestlers on a great season and good luck to all those who advanced to next week's NCS championships!!
